Examination Procedure

PET/CT is a lengthy and complex examination performed at a pre-arranged appointment time. It is important that patients arrive punctually for their scheduled examination. Please make sure to bring all relevant medical documentation and records with you.

You must not eat during the 6 hours preceding the examination; however, it is recommended to drink plenty of still, unflavoured mineral water or water. Consumption of candy, chewing gum, coffee, soft drinks, or tea is STRICTLY PROHIBITED during the 6 hours before the examination. Patients should continue taking their regular medications as prescribed, with the possible exception of certain types of insulin used by diabetic patients. The administration of such medications will always be discussed individually with our staff. Insulin must be administered at least 4 hours before the radiopharmaceutical used for the examination is injected. The required blood glucose level for the examination is 4–11 mmol/L. If blood glucose levels are elevated, the examination may need to be rescheduled, as high blood glucose levels can lead to inaccurate results.

During the 48 hours preceding the examination, patients should avoid strenuous physical activity, active sports, and heavy physical work. The examination cannot be performed during pregnancy or if pregnancy is suspected.

Examination of breastfeeding mothers requires prior consultation with a specialist physician.

Following intravenous administration of the radiopharmaceutical used for the PET examination, patients must rest quietly for approximately 10–120 minutes in a designated waiting area, depending on the radiopharmaceutical administered and the clinical indication. During this period, all physical and mental activities should be avoided (including reading, walking, talking, using a mobile phone, etc.). Prior to the PET/CT examination, an oral CT contrast agent may also be administered, which must be consumed during the waiting period after dilution with water. After the waiting period, the examination is performed with an empty bladder; therefore, patients will be asked to empty their bladder immediately before the scan. The examination is painless and does not involve physical exertion or significant noise exposure.

The examination itself takes approximately 10–15 minutes. During this time, the patient must lie still on the examination table in a supine position. Depending on the type of examination, the arms must be positioned either alongside the body or above the head. After the examination, patients may eat and drink without restriction.

To protect individuals under the age of 18 and pregnant women, close physical proximity and physical contact (including breastfeeding, hugging, co-sleeping, etc.) should be avoided for 24 hours after the examination.
